If you\u2019re running your first marathon, you might start with a minimum of 15 miles per week,\u201d Kann says.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than looking for a specific mileage plan, think of it more like building up to a certain amount of time on your feet. \u201cThis allows the runner to progress safely,\u201d says Rich Velazquez, a running coach at Mile High Run Club in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there are a few rules of thumb and general guidelines that can help you come up with how many miles a week to run.<\/p>\n<p>And, determining how many miles to run for a race first means knowing how many miles are in the distance you\u2019re choosing.<\/p>\n<p>How many miles in a 5K: 3.1<\/p>\n<p>How many miles in a 10K: 6.2<\/p>\n<p>How many miles in a half marathon: 13.1<\/p>\n<p>How many miles in a marathon: 26.2<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86_1_%D9%87%D8%B1_%DA%86%D9%87_%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%A7%D8%A8%D9%82%D9%87_%D8%B7%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C%E2%80%8C%D8%AA%D8%B1_%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B4%D8%AF%D8%8C_%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%A7%D9%81%D8%AA_%D9%87%D9%81%D8%AA%DA%AF%DB%8C_%D8%A8%DB%8C%D8%B4%D8%AA%D8%B1_%D9%85%DB%8C%E2%80%8F%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%AF\"><\/span>Rule 1: The longer the race, the higher the mileage.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Duh, right? If you\u2019re training for a marathon, you\u2019re obviously going to need to log more weekly miles than if you\u2019re training for a 5K. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 752\/499;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With running comes a certain level of discomfort; part of the challenge is pushing yourself past those I-don\u2019t-know-if-I-can-do-this boundaries. But Kann doesn\u2019t advocate running through pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiscomfort naturally comes with training as your body adapts, but if you feel the pain on one side of your body and not on the other or if you\u2019re dealing with some kind of persistent pain, that's a sign that there's some kind of imbalance at play,\u201d she says. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and pull back your pace or take a rest day. No runner ever healed any kind of pain or injury by running more.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\" translation-block\">Rule 6: A healthy runner beats an injured runner every time.<\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the day, the most important goal of any runner\u2014whether you\u2019re running a marathon, half marathon, 10K, or 5K\u2014is to make it to the starting line without injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last thing you want is to overload yourself, break yourself down, and then push yourself past your limits,\u201d says Kann. \u201cThat\u2019s when you're gonna pull yourself out of the game for three weeks to recover. Then you\u2019re really in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not feeling up to run, rest and reschedule,\u201d says Velazquez. \u201cAnd should that feeling persist, people training for longer races (i.e. a marathon) should give priority to the long run over the speed training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remember: No one\u2019s grading you on how well you stick to a mass-produced plan anyone on the internet can download. Before you get back to running, make sure you can walk for at least 45 minutes without pain, says exercise physiologist Susan Paul. Walking will help recondition your muscles, tendons, and ligaments to prepare for the more vigorous demands of running to come.<\/p>\n<p>Then, you need to consider how long you\u2019ve been off, adds Adam St. Pierre, a coach for CTS in Colorado Springs.
